Tip of the week!

Grand Finals of ISNSC 09

From over 220 teams in Singapore, only the top 24 teams make the cut and earn themselves a ticket to the Grand Finals of the Inter-School National Scrabble Championships 2009.

Having performed well in the Preliminaries, St Hilda's Team 2 and Team 3 have secured a place in the prestigious Grand Finals. Before the Grand Finals even started, both teams were hit with huge blows due to the unavailability of 2 pupils who could not turn up.

So, instead of sending two teams of 5, St Hilda's had to contend with two teams of 4! This means our opponents will automatically have a walkover for that absentee.

Nevertheless,

Team 2, represented by Ian Choo, Jacob Chew, Kang Hong Wei and Lim Eng Yin, impressed all their opponents in the first 3 rounds. They won all their games and steamrolled their way to the top category, The Cup Category, winning 4-1, 4-1 and 4-1 (the 1 due to one pupil who could not turn up).

Team 3, represented by Nicole Sim, Isabelle Lim, Teo Min Ru and Sandra Teo, did not flinch either. Despite being one man down, they too steamrolled their way to the top category, The Cup Category, winning 4-1, 4-1 and 4-1 too!

In the 4th and final round, alas Team 2 met formidable opposition and a bad run of luck and lost narrowly on all accounts. Only Eng Yin managed a win, making it an aggregate of 1-4.

However, Team 3 (despite one man down mind you) continued their steamrolling momentum and annihilated the opposition with an aggregate of 4-1!

Team 2 managed a respectable 8th placing while Team 3 have clinched Bronze!

Congratulations to both teams! You were awesome!

A singer's declaration

Chantal is a famous singer from the band The Lovebullies. Here's what she has to say about Scrabble: -

"I was actually raised in a strict scrabble household. My parents judged my friends according to how cleverly they used the letter 's'. I am not joking. My Mother and I lived alone in a great big cold farmhouse for many years. We could only afford to heat one room in the winter so we played scrabble by candlelight in the farmhouse kitchen and my mom carved old root vegetables into the shapes of other foods, like glazed ham, my favourite, while I took my turn. We would often put the game on hold for entire days while I went to school in town 4 miles away. We would play right until we could see the bus coming through the trees at the end of the driveway. Sometimes when I got home she would have rearranged the letters on the board to spell out "I love you" or "where did you put the scissors". At 80 she still loves to play and when I go home I would beat her easy every time. She still makes the same noise she always did when she has too many vowels on her rack."
